Life Begins At Zero
The CD opener was witten after a crushing breakup. When you're
born, your age is zero. When you feel like you've lost everything, there's
really only one direction to go. We can start over anytime we want. Rock
on...

Answer The Door
We are always looking for love and when it is right in front of us we
rarely see it. If you have been without a love in your life for some time,
this song is for you. Love is all around you. Give a little and you will
get a lot.

Into The Wind
A song about persistence. Written during a period when I was being influenced
by John Katchur and other acoustic guitar icons like Bruce Cockburn and
David Wilcox. The guitar lick symbolizing "trying to jump on to a
moving train" is still one of my favorites.

Annie
"Annie" may be my favorite love song. There is so much honesty
and tenderness here. It contains all the things I have always wanted to
say to my true love. Change the name to suit your situation. "If
I told you I could live without you, that would be the truth but also
a lie."

Almost Angeline
Written with A.J. Croce, this song is about two people who meet up after
many years, and aren't sure if they know each other. "On the other
hand she never wore a wedding ring. But on the other hand I guess that
don't mean anything." Pure pop for now people...

Make My Dreams Come True Tonight
OK, this may also be my favorite love song. This one also has some of
my best lines, like "Your beauty is like a river flowing into an
endless sea, and your love is like a blanket I pull over me." The
folky feel and harmonies were inspired by the songs of Joel Rafael.

The Yellow Line
A collaboration with Dani Carroll. In life we need to keep our side of
the street clean. Like driving down the road and staying on your side
of the yellow line. It became a driving song. Driving through life, through
others lives, through time.

Someday Love
Two lonely people find true love by chance. It helps to know what you
want. That way, when it appears, you'll recognize it. Written at a time
when I was listening to Don Henry's album "Wild In The Backyard"
quite a bit. His influence is blatant here.

Fifty Foot Woman
Though the title may recall the 1950s sci-fi movie, it's really about
the size of a mother in proportion to a newborn baby. Written at the time
my son was born this tune has been a perennial favorite at live shows.

Something To Fall Back On
Written with Calman Hart, this song is about a spiritual connection, to
a Higher Power and also to the one you love. Peter Bolland's lap steel
solo is the musical centerpiece of this record. Absolute heaven.

Pieces Of Me
Sometimes you feel like everyone wants a piece of you. This song takes
a look at one of those days. The simple musical pattern and guitar/vocal
arrangement give this song its power. A live favorite, this song was covered
by John Katchur on his 1994 release "Friend Of The Moon."

The Nothing Song
A little roots rock number that looks at spirituality versus materialism.
The character in the song says "I've got nothing to give you but
my heart." Does anyone really , truly have anything else to give?

Spend The Night
A lighthearted song about making up. Except in this one he's begging her
to come back to her own house. The latin feel gives this song a subtle
sexy undertone. Forgiveness, surrender and acceptance, mixed with a dash
of self-deprecating humor.

Another Dead Weekend
Ever have one of those weekends when none of your friends are around,
and there's nothing to do? Sometimes the quiet is your friend, other times
it drives you mad.

Rain And The Thunder
Determination and self-esteem are minimum requirements in this sometimes-cruel
world. People judge us by their own standards, no matter what our own
perceived integrity.

Snapshot
The characters in this song face a bleak urban existence, but hope is
all around, and the spirit will outlast any challenge. "When the
shots ring out and the walls come tumbling down, it's good to have you
around."

We All Need Love
The chorus asks "We all need love...what are you afraid of?"
Fear can keep you from getting what you want in life. It can keep you
from sharing the joy that life can bring. It can keep you from taking
the risk that finally turns the karma wheel your way.

Serendipity
So much of life is becoming. Wouldn't it be nice to have more
time for being? This song is about how we scurry through life
trying so hard to achieve, and lose the lesson of living. The simple life
is simple, and we often find it by accident.

When I Let Go
A power ballad about walking away. Some people are incapable of intimacy.
It's nothing personal, but sometimes we take it that way. Rick Burkhardt's
accordion on the intro and outro counters the heavy electric guitars in
the main part of this song.

Thrift Shop Shoes
A tale that is sad, but all too true in our society. The character in
this song grows up used and abused. The only comfortable thing in her
life is those thrift shop shoes. Check John Katchur's guitar and basswork
in the outro. Haunting.

How I Know
This tune has a soulful groove and a familiar theme; Love. The question
is "How do you know you're in love? A few tell-tale symptoms are
outlined here. Beautiful flute solo by Michael Ganey, and what would a
happy love song be without whistling?

Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven
(Nobody Wants To Die)
Inspired by a bumper sticker bearing this message, it's a song about commitment
between people. The grass is all green, folks. Don't go looking for different
shades. When you find it, cherish it.

Buzzers And Sirens
When you care for someone, sometimes you have to let them go. It is easy
to find the faults we all have. Instinct can protect us, but it can also
work against us. Ths song started as a poem, but deserved a melody and
a voice to sing it.

Let Me Down Easy
Have you ever been in a relationship that got really intense really fast?
You hang on for dear life, wondering when the ride will end. When it does,
it's hard to walk away. If you're going to let me down, let me down easy.

Helluva Highway
Another collaboration with Calman Hart. The chorus came to me riding the
bus to work. The verses tell the story of a loner who's seen and done
it all. "Broke more hearts than Elvis, burned more bridges than the
Viet Cong."
